Beyond the Kids' Menu - California Pizza Kitchen

California Pizza Kitchen is a Californian institution.  They were the among the first major players in the gourmet pizza restaurant niche.  They have some fun meals and are a great place to dine out.  However, like most restaurants, their kids' menu is sorely lacking.  They have the usual offenders like mac n' cheese and buttered pasta (I'm sorry, that just sounds gross!).  They seem to have tried a healthier option with a salad, but upon closer inspection, it consists of only lettuce, dressing, and goldfish crackers (Really?  Why?)  So naturally, I looked to see what other options they had that would offer my daughter more veggies, and here is what she tried.

She decided on a cup (7 oz) of their smashed pea and barley soup along with the white corn guacamole and chips from their small cravings menu.  She loved it!  It certainly helps that her favorite color is green, so having so much green in her meal was fun.  The soup is a perfect size for a small child.  We had them bring it out a little early so it had time to cool (with the help of a few ice cubes) before the rest of the meal was served.  She raved about the soup and insisted that I learn how to make it at home.

The guacamole was also a real winner.  It is made with avocado, corn, black beans, jicama, bell pepper,  scallions, cilantro, and serrano peppers.  It was not spicy at all and served cold so it was easy for her to eat.  Chips are a treat for her so she was very excited about it.  Don't believe that a three year old would eat these?  Just look at how she cleared her dishes all on her own.  She didn't even share!  :)

Another great item form their small craving menu is their Mediterranean Plate with pita, hummus, and a cucumber greek salad.  Unfortunately, this location was no longer serving it, but if the CPK near you has it, it is a great option for kids!  The kids' menu offerings run about $5-$6, and this meal cost us $7.75.

Beyond the Kids' Menu - Ruby's Diner

Ruby's will always have a special place in my heart.  It was the site of my first date with my future husband when we were just juniors in high school.  :)  This diner has classic comfort foods like burgers, shakes, chicken tenders, and sandwiches.  We still love to go to any of our local Ruby's Diners.  My daughter just loves the retro diner decor and various themes (like trains or boats) they use to further decorate the spaces.  However, I never liked the choices on the kids menu.  They have your usual offenders like grilled cheese, chicken tenders, corn dogs, and the like.  Not really items I like to feed my daughter.  To be honest, we always took homemade lunches for her whenever we went to restaurants, but as she has gotten older, that is less of an option for us.

However, there is a menu item that I do like for her on the adult menu.  It is their "Skinny Lunch"!  Yes, I hate the name, but it is such a great meal for her.  Best of all, she LOVES it!  The meal consists of a turkey or veggie patty (we opt for the veggie patty), a bowl of fruit, cottage cheese, and salsa.  What a great variety for a well balanced meal!  Why this can't be an option on the kids menu, I just don't understand.

Now, the kids menu ranges in price from $4 - $5 and the "Skinny Lunch" costs $8.49.  Even though it is about double the average cost of a kids' meal, I think it is well worth it.  I hope healthier meals like this find their way onto kids' menus.  It is such a great option!

Beyond the Kids' Menu - Island's Restaurant

I am so very excited about this!  We don't often go out for meals, but things got a little crazy this past weekend.  We decided to go to our local Island's for a quick lunch.  To my surprise, they happened to be testing out a few new menu items, including their Fresh Beach Bowl.  I took one look at all the veggies on there and I knew my little girl would love it!  We told her what it was and she was ready to try it out.

When her bowl came, it looked just as good as the marketing photo.  It was also fairly large given that this is on the adult menu.  Some of the pieces were a little too big for her, but that was easy to overcome.  She LOVED it!  In fact, my husband loved it too!  (I didn't sample it because of the chicken, but it smelled delicious!)  It was a little pricey ($9.49 + tax) - about double the average kids' menu item, but we got 2 meals out of it.  I think it was well worth the price to get such a great variety of veggies and brown rice.

This item is only in the testing phase, so if you happen to be near one of the Island's restaurants that is testing this menu item (just call ahead to check), please give it a try.  I hope this option is here to stay!
